NAPS at the 24th Annual Gardening in the Northern Neck Seminar

The 24th Annual Gardening in the Northern Neck Seminar was once again a big hit (and sold out!), held Saturday, March 25, 2017, at the Church of the Nazarene in White Stone VA. NAPS showed its support for Northern Neck Master Gardeners by participating in the exhibit section (Photo: NAPS President Mike Ahart talks with event attendees at the NAPS display).

Featured speakers were Rick Darke and Dr. Doug Tallamy, co-authors of The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden.

Mr. Darke opened with a look at essential living layers in habitats and wild places, showing they can and should be part of your garden landscape.

Dr. Tallamy followed with a detailed look at co-evolved relationships between plants and animals and what that means for gardeners – especially how native trees are essential to support the thousands of caterpillars needed to feed a single nest of baby birds.

Mr. Darke concluded by putting it all together in a presentation focused on design and maintenance strategies.
