The latest PFAS ("forever chemicals") legislation is working its way through Virginia legislation this session. HB 1072 is on the docket for the Chesapeake subcommittee of the Virginia House today at 4pm. This bill would clarify that local governments have the right to test sewage sludge applications for any toxic contaminant, including PFAS. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality hasn’t been allowing testing for PFAS, which Potomac Riverkeepers Network (PRK) and NAPS believe is a violation of the Clean Water Act. Learn more:

If you’d like to support this bill, you have two options:

  1. Testify in person. This is the most impactful way to support, but also the most difficult. If you plan on testifying in person and need help with logistics, send Madeleine Green of PRK an email and she’ll help you with parking and navigating the General Assembly.

  2. Testify virtually. Here is the link to register to speak. If you can’t make it in person, this is the best way to make sure your voice is heard.

The amount of time the speakers have to testify will be announced at the beginning of the committee – probably between 30 seconds and 1 minute.

Here’s a quick template for testifying:

Madame Chair and members of the committee. My name is [Your Name], and I’m a [farmer/waterman/resident living near biosolids/other occupation]. I support HB 1072. I believe this bill would allow farmers and localities to get the data they need to make informed decisions about biosolids. [Give one or two reasons why you’re concerned about or impacted by PFAS in biosolids].

Thank you.

Feel free to make the template your own, but remember to address the chair and the members of the committee, state your support, and keep it brief.
