Litter on our roads and highways creates more than just an eyesore. It harms wildlife, pollutes waterways, and increases cleanup costs for communities. One simple way to reduce roadside litter is to keep trash inside your vehicle until you can dispose of it properly. To support this effort, the Northumberland County Anti-Litter Committee is hosting a special event this Saturday, June 6, 2026. They will be giving away free removable, hanging, waterproof car trash bags at the three county recycling centers.

Littering from vehicles is a major source of pollution on Northumberland County’s roads. Items like fast food wrappers, drink containers, and cigarette butts often end up tossed out car windows. These small pieces of trash add up quickly and:

  • Harm local wildlife that may ingest or get tangled in litter

  • Pollute streams and rivers when rain washes debris into waterways

  • Create unsafe driving conditions when trash attracts animals or blows onto the roadway

Despite laws against littering, many drivers lack convenient ways to store trash inside their cars until they reach a proper disposal site. This event aims to change that by providing a practical tool to help drivers keep their vehicles clean and litter-free.

The Northumberland County Anti-Litter Committee will distribute free car trash bags at the Lottsburg, Horsehead, and Ditchley Recycling Centers. These bags are designed specifically for use inside vehicles and offer several key features:

  • Removable and portable: Easily take the bag with you when you leave your car

  • Hanging design: Hooks onto your headrest for easy access

  • Waterproof material: Prevents leaks and keeps your car interior clean

  • Compact size: Fits neatly without taking up much space

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until supplies last. This means you should arrive early to ensure you get your free bag.

How You Can Help Beyond the Event

Getting a free car trash bag is a great start, but there are other ways to support litter prevention in Northumberland County:

  • Participate in local cleanup events: Join NAPS and other community groups that organize roadside or creek cleanups.

  • Spread the word: Encourage friends and family to use car trash bags and dispose of waste properly.

  • Report littering: Notify local authorities if you witness illegal dumping or littering.

  • Reduce waste: Choose reusable containers and avoid single-use plastics to minimize trash generation.

Every small action adds up to a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone. Together, we can make a difference.
