Celebrate at the NAPS 5th Annual Earth Day Festival, Sat. April 20

NAPS will be hosting the 5th Annual Earth Day Festival in "Downtown" Heathsville during the season’s first Farmers Market – Saturday, April 20, 2019, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with dozens of environmental exhibits and activities set up by NAPS and other organizations. It's free and open to the public.

Planned exhibits include a real eagle’s nest and other wildlife displays from Rappahannock Wildlife Refuge Friends, as well as the Capt. John Smith sailing barge from Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, complete with interpreters in period dress (see photos below). The museum also plans to display a working diorama demonstrating how roadside litter ends up in our creeks and Bay.

Other planned exhibits will showcase solar energy, oyster gardening, shoreline management, natural areas, native plants and litter control. By popular demand, NAPS is planning another “All-Electric Car” exhibit – check out the future of transportation! Also, NAPS will be giving away free reusable grocery bags at the "Earth Day Pledge Tree." (See article and slideshow of last year's Festival)

The Earth Day 5K Run will start at 8 a.m.. Runners, walkers, and dogs (on leashes) are welcome, and there will be a free Tot Trot for kids 5 and under at 9:15. Once again this year, a $1000 cash award will be made to the local High School/Middle School (combined) with the most entrants. A $500 cash award will go to the school with the next highest number of entrants. Public and private schools in Northumberland, Westmoreland, Lancaster, Richmond, and Essex counties are eligible for the prize. Team prizes will also be awarded to the top 2 high school and top 2 middle school student teams, made up of 5 or more runners.Visit runnnk.org to sign up and for more information.
